What is the King’s Award for Voluntary Service?

Launched in 2002 and previously known as The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the King’s Award for Voluntary Service is celebrated every year on 14th November, to coincide with King Charles’ birthday.

The prestigious award is equivalent to an MBE. It is the highest honour a volunteer group can be given and is awarded for life.

You can find out more about the King’s Award on their website here.
And see a full list of recipients this year here, with an interactive map available as well.

Why have we received the King’s Award for Voluntary Service?

The award has been made in recognition of the exceptional work the Trust’s volunteers do for the benefit of vulnerable people and those experiencing homelessness in King’s Lynn.

Commitment of The Purfleet Trust’s 40-plus strong volunteer force has been evident at our Purfleet Pantry project, the social supermarket located at Southgates Roundabout, which is largely volunteer operated.

Opened in 2023, the Purfleet Pantry has supported over 1200 people experiencing hardship in King’s Lynn through access to affordable food, essentials, furniture, and access to the full range of support services on offer through the Trust.

Volunteers also support The Purfleet Trust at our Health & Wellbeing Centre in Austin Fields and Purfleet Pathways, our warehouse in the North Lynn Industrial Estate. These projects provide essential support to over 600 people every year experiencing homelessness in King’s Lynn with housing, employment and mental health support, as well as daily meals, clothing and showers.

Chief Executive of The Purfleet Trust, Paula Hall, said:

We are humbled and honoured to receive such a prestigious award.

This recognition highlights the phenomenal commitment of our volunteers and supporters, not just over the past few years but throughout the 31-year history of The Purfleet Trust.

Without their dedication, our vital work in King’s Lynn would not have been possible.

A word from Sir Martyn Lewis CBE

Volunteers and Purfleet

Since our founding in 1993, The Purfleet Trust has been deeply grateful for the commitment of our volunteers.

Last year marked an incredible 30 years of supporting individuals in West Norfolk. Over the years, the service has grown significantly, expanding from a couple of rooms on Purfleet Quay to now operating across three sites and providing support through six Pathway Training Houses, with over 50 incredible volunteers.
