Health & Wellbeing

Homelessness can have a negative impact on people’s physical health.

At Purfleet one of our key focuses is on improving Health & Wellbeing, and we have seen first-hand how this can improve peoples’ lives.

Studies show that people experiencing homelessness are six times more likely to have heart disease, and are more likely to die at a younger age than people with secure housing. In fact, health inequalities are so stark that the mean age at death is just 45.4 years for men and 43.2 years for women experiencing homelessness.

New Beginnings Fitness Suite – our on-site gym

New Beginnings is our very own custom-designed fitness suite on-site at the Health & Wellbeing Centre. New Beginnings provides clients with one-to-one and group fitness sessions organised by our resident trainer, support worker Jason.

The gym has a rowing machine, treadmill, free weights, static bike, punching bag, multigym equipment and more.

We encourage all clients to get involved with the gym, whether they are more comfortable in groups or alone. The gym allows clients to push themselves in something new, gives them a distraction any issues in their personal lives, and gives them a real sense of achievement.

In the warmer weather, we run the a wider range of accessible fitness activities, including football, walking groups and more. Contact us to find out our upcoming schedule.

Improving our facilities

We strongly believe in the power of physical activity in improving mental health and wellbeing, and we’ve been so proud to offer gym facilities at our Health & Wellbeing Centre.

In 2024, we partnered with Lily and Jordan Fitness to give New Beginnings a makeover and new equipment! Read more about this partnership here or watch the video from behind the scenes!

I get any frustrations out in the gym – I just feel better for doing it. It helps to take my mind off any problems I have, and I miss it when I don’t come.

Health Navigator Programme

A pioneering project in partnership with East of England Cancer Alliance and Anglia Ruskin University to tackle cancer among people experiencing homelessness.

Launched in 2025, the Health Navigator Programme is a region-wide initiative which aims to improve the health of people experiencing homelessness by reducing barriers to healthcare, increasing engagement with primary care, and promoting early detection of serious conditions.

People experiencing homelessness often face serious health challenges and can die from conditions that are preventable or treatable, simply because they are unable to access the care they need. According to Shelter, the average age of death is just 45 for men and 43 for women – over 30 years younger than the general population.

Working with East of England Cancer Alliance and Anglia Ruskin University, a dedicated Health Navigator has been placed in our Health & Wellbeing Centre to work directly with clients to achieve positive health outcomes by supporting healthy lifestyles, encouraging check-ups and more.

The programme has a strong focus on increasing awareness of symptoms that could be linked to cancer, with particular emphasis on the early detection of liver cancer, which claims more than 500 lives each year in the East of England.

Last year, our Health Navigator supported attendance of 53 medical appointments, and a further 87 on-site liver health checks and Hep-C tests through NHS drop-in clinics.

My Health Navigator role is vital to support those who often neglect their own health or get forgotten about to access and connect with the healthcare services they so desperately need. I am proud that I have managed to get clients engaged and understand the importance of cancer screening.

Counselling

At the Health & Wellbeing Centre, we have a regular counsellor who sees our clients. Counselling is an important part of moving forward out of homelessness.

Our counsellor offers these services in a safe, impartial and confidential manner to ensure that our clients feel as comfortable as possible in opening up and getting the help that they need.

Wellbeing Room

In our Wellbeing Room at the Health & Wellbeing Centre, we have a number of drop-in clinics for our clients.

These include a regular nurse, volunteer hairdresser and footcare specialists.

These services are vital to ensure that our clients get the wraparound services that they need to move forward in their lives. With the health implications of homelessness so clear, having these health professionals work with us is essential.
